Trapper Creek Alaska
by Pete Marsh, Chugiak AK
This video was taken near Trapper Creek Alaska. A small village about 100 miles north of Anchorage on the Parks Highway.
Larry Weeks and I wanted to run some of the back trails and dirt roads that surround the Trapper Creek area looking for black bear and spruce hen to hunt. The Urals worked perfectly for what we wanted to do. We had shot guns and rifles with us as well as very optimistic expectations of completing our mission. The day started out cold and frosty and the bikes ran great. The bikes work perfectly for hunting because unlike a four wheeler or (ATV) they can be ridden legally on the highway until you reach your off road hunting destination. We took rations with us (a macho way of saying lunch) and extra gas.
We had a lot of options as far as places to hunt went and we didn't want to be limited by fuel range. What a great time we had! I shot at three spruce hen and they all got away! We saw a very large black bear, but he was moving too fast for us. It was a bit of a bummer, because I had a fantasy in my minds eye, of Larry and I triumphantly pulling into the Trapper Creek Trading post with our big, black, furry, (and dead) friend sitting up in the sidecar of my gear up! But alas, it was not to be. However, black bear or no, we got a great chance to test out the machines. We took them through some very rough mud holes and swamps. In the video it looks like the machine is struggling somewhat, but viewers should be aware that the machine was only in one wheel drive!
All in all it was a great day. Larry and I are going to do it again soon before the snow flies (not that the snow would stop us) and that big blackie had better look out! We might need his help to get out of a mud hole!
